Waveney DC has banned new style pre-payment water meters from council homes in order to protect tenants, reports the East Anglian Daily Times (p23).

Essex and Suffolk Water, which supplies the area told the council it was considering using the meters in the future. If tenants fall behind with payments, the meters automatically cut off supply without notifying the council.

Waveney leader Bob Blizzard said water was an important necessity and should only be cut off in extreme circumstances. He said the council was concerned automatic disconnection avoided legal protections available to users and led to public and personal health risks.

Some councils are making legal challenges to water companies' rights to install the devices.
