William Hague has vowed to scrap north of England regional development agencies, according to the Northern Echo (Oct 5, p1).

The Conservative leader said an incoming Tory government would abolish the new RDAs in the North-East and Yorkshire, set up to help fight unemployment.

Hague called English RDAs 'largely ineffective bureaucracies' and said the Tories would return to the system of focussing aid on particular areas.

Conservative aides said later the English RDA abolition would not affect the Scottish development agency operating nearby.

John Bridge, chairman of RDA One North East, called Mr Hague's threat 'bizarre' considering his organisation was only six months old.
