A motion to back the legalisation of soft drugs has been defeated in a vote last night by Wear Valley DC, the Newcastle Journal reports (p12).

Councillor John Goldsborough had wanted the council to lobby the government over the proposal, but his colleagues voted down the move.

The council has now decided to ask the government for more money to allow the police to tackle the growing problem of drug abuse, the paper reports.
