Councillors from Wear Valley DC are to consider calling on the government to legalise soft drugs and allow police to concentrate on fighting the spread of harder substances, the Newcastle Journal reports (p15).

Labour members are expected to oppose the motion on Wednesday and intend to call for extra cash to step up the battle against all drugs.

However, council leader Betty Todd, who is presenting the motion, said although she did not want to see soft drugs legalised, radical action was needed to keep the problem under control, the paper reports.
