Low paid cleaners for Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council are in the final stages of winning a £200,000 back-pay settlement, The Western Mail reports (p6).

Seventeen of the 60 workers, originally employed by the direct labour unit of the former Cynon Valley BC, have already had their claims agreed to. Some of the cleaners have been working for £2.35p an hour with no holidays, their union argues.

GMB officials said the pay was much less than that of neighbouring authorities.

The pay-out coincides with large scale voluntary redundancies and lay-offs in the borough due to financial pressure, the paper reports.
