No government money is available to introduce safety precautions in local authority schools in the wake of the Dunblane tragedy, the Welsh Office has told Carmarthenshire Council.

The government will pay 85% of the costs of security measures in voluntary aided schools and will provide grants to schools which have opted out of local authority control.

'As far as financial support is concerned for LEA maintained schools, their provision, repair and maintenance is the responsibility of the individual LEA,' a Welsh Office spokesman told Carmarthenshire education director Keith Davies.
