Jon Shortridge has been appointed director of economic affairs at the Welsh Office. He is currently director of the Welsh Office's local government group.

Mr Shortridge will take over from John Craig, who will be retiring at the end of March.

Mr Shortridge joined the ministry of housing and local government in 1969, serving subsequently in the department of the environment, before leaving the civil service in 1975 to become group planning officer at Shropshire CC.

He rejoined the civil service in 1984 on appointment to the Welsh Office. In 1987-1988, he was private secretary to two Welsh secretaries (Nicholas Edwards and Peter Walker).

Following a period in the finance group, he was appointed head of the local government reorganisation group in 1992, moving to his present post in 1995.
