Welsh office ministers have given a lukewarm response to education secretary, John Patten's call for more school opt-outs, the TES reports (p6).

The new rule to be introduced in the new year requiring local authority schools to hold annual discussions on changing grant- maintained status will not be applied in Wales, says the paper.

A Welsh Office spokesman said schools should be allowed to set their own pace on this issue.
