In a move to 'restore democratic accountability', Labour would require quango members in Wales to reapply for their jobs or face a possible public interview to justify their position, reports the Western Mail (p5).

Bridgend Labour MP Win Griffiths, who has been examining how a Welsh assembly would tackle the 'Tory quango state' announced the plan which could involve more than 1,000 members.

He said the quango appointment procedures had developed under the Tories as a way of removing responsibility from locally elected people and giving them to people appointed by the Welsh Office.

Labour would also introduce greater monitoring procedures and ensure all appointments were carried out in accordance with Nolan guidelines.
