A Welsh Assembly government spokesman commented on the announcement by education secretary Estelle Morris of an independent inquiry into the actions of OCR and the QCA* as follows:

'We welcome the government statement that the quality and standards of the qualifications must be maintained. We will be working closely with our colleagues in Westminster to ensure that standards are consistent. We also support the students in their request for a reassessment of their marks although this is a mechanism which is already built into the system. We also welcome the independent review into the wider issue of A level standard setting that has been set into motion. The question of standards are a matter for all in the UK.'
