Troubled Welwyn Hatfield DC has a new leader, reports BBC Three Counties.

She is Jacqui Russell, who officially takes over this morning. Her election comes after 11 frontbenchers, including the former Labour leader and the Conservative opposition leader, resigned last week over the affair which has left the council owing almost £50 million in compensation to a property developer.

Four councillors who had nothing to do with the negotiations with the developers, Slough Estates, yesterday called on the district auditor to hold a full, wide-ranging inquiry into all the circumstances which culminated in court action against the local authority. They denied they wanted a witch hunt, but said until all the facts were known people would have no confidence in the authority.
