Welwyn Hatfield MP David Evans launched a strongly-worded attack on his local district council in the house of commons, reports BBC Three Counties.

In an adjournment debate last night he called for the council to sell off its housing stock to pay the£40m it owes to property developers Slough Estates. It was ordered to pay the money after being found guilty of lying to Slough over the nature of retail competition in the area.

David Evans said urgent action was needed.

He told the house: 'Those responsible for these lies, fraud, deceit must be brought to book and to be made responsible for the debt; and they must be disqualified from ever standing as councillors again so that these incompetent, inadequate financial pygmies can never ever be allowed to rob the people of Welwyn Hatfield again'.

Replying, junior environment minister Paul Beresford told Mr Evans there would be no money available from central government. He agreed the voluntary transfer of housing stock was the best option for the council.
