A Conservative member has resigned from Welwyn Hatfield DC in protest over his party's stance over the future of the local hospital, reports BBC Three Counties.

Keith Prentice says he is angry the group did not take a tough line against a threat to axe accident and emergency services.

He has now joined the Labour Party.

Mr Prentice said he considered defecting to the Labour group as a councillor, but admits he came under pressure from the Conservative group simply to resign.

'I felt, for the people I represented, the group needed to make a stand and I was very disappointed that the vast majority of the group didn't actually deal with it' he said.
