Welwyn Hatfield DC Conservatives are trying to distance themselves from the scandal over £49 million High Court damages awarded against the council (LGC, 9 August).

It was ordered to pay the damages because it lied to the developer of a shopping centre about a change in planning permission for a rival complex.

The local Conservative association has placed a full-page advertisement in local newspapers claiming that although its members sat on the committee which decided not to reveal the change in planning permission, they were not informed of all the facts.

Labour leader Ray Little, who also sat on the committee, said the Conservatives were misleading the public and bringing local government into disrepute.

'You cannot have the ability to make decisions which affect people's lives and not take responsibility for them,' he said. He claimed the three Conservative members who sat on the committee had access to the same information as the other members.
