A leading Labour councillor at West Lothian Council has quit because he says he could not support some of the candidates put up by hisparty for the 6 May council elections.

The Herald (26 March, p8) reported that Tony Kinder, chairman of the strategic services committee, accused the West Lothian Labour group of being poorly led, dominated by self-seeking careerists and tolerant of bigotry.

He said: 'My position has been made untenable by a combination of factors. Supposed Labour colleagues have ben leaking stories about me. These all turn out to be without foundation but are harmful to my reputation and ability to work.'

He is currently under investigation by the council's standards committee over allegations he failed to declare an interest when he chaired a committee which gave a£5,000 grant to a friend, Professor Alfred Molina, to hold a conference.

Council leader Graeme Morrice said he was saddened by Mr Kinder's decision to go. He said: 'He has worked extremely hard for his constituents ... and I wish Tony all the best for the future.'
