Councils in the West Midlands have earned a pat on the back from the local government ombudsman for their willingness to act on taxpayer complaints, the Birmingham Post reports (p4).

The number of complaints against local councils across the area has fallen from 1,551 in 1995/1996 to 1,378 in the last financial year, the ombudsman's annual report shows.

Birmingham, which boasts a dramatic drop, from 361 to 238 complaints, was singled out by the ombudsman Jerry White as exemplary in putting things right.
