Western Isles Island Council is planning to use funds from the government's private finance initiative to build three new schools, reports the Glasgow Herald (p1).

The plans stemmed from a meeting with Scottish secretary Michael Forsyth in November when the council had hoped to obtain additional borrowing permission.

Western Isles Island Council vice-convenor Angus Graham told the paper:

'All we heard was PFI this and PFI that. So we said let's seriously examine what would be involved with this PFI.

'We are now working on a detailed financial plan which should be ready within the next few weeks.'
