Westminster City Council is seeking government money to offer rough sleepers from EU accession countries a

one-way ticket home.

The council has identified 20-30 foreign nationals, mainly from Poland, sleeping rough by Victoria Station since the 10 new member states joined the union on 1 May.

It said many had been the victims of scams offering 'guaranteed' employment and accommodation in London in return for up-front payments.

Council leader Simon Milton (Con) is meeting Home Office officials next month to lobby for cash to offer them a trip home.

A council spokesperson said: 'If people said they would like a trip home, we would consider subsidising them. It is certainly not forcing people to do anything.'
