The Guardian (p6) reports on Westminster LBC's security measures at St George's RC school in Maida Vale in the context of recommendations on safety in school made by a working group earlier this year.

The paper focuses on concerns that the government's promise of 'substantial' additional resources from next April is to be implemented through a school grants programme which requires governors and local authorities to provide 40 per cent of total project costs.

In Middlesbrough, where a 12 year old was knifed to death by a school intruder last year, Middlesborough BC is bidding for a £100,000 school security budget next year.

Ashok Kumar, Middlesborough BC education committee vice-chair, told the paper: 'The prospect of cutting other services to pay for security, or of parents fund-raising to provide for children's security, is absolutely scandalous.'
