The withdrawal of support from a leading barrister and from CIPFA led to last night's suspension by Westminster City Council of its controversial designated sales scheme, the London Evening Standard reports (p2).

The authority's chief legal adviser, Jeremy Sullivan QC, has now said his advice to the council on the scheme was made on the basis of incomplete information provided to him, the Standard says.

CIPFA, previously cited by Westminster as supportive of designated sales, has also since issued a public denial of this.
