The government will look again at consulting councils over innovations open to schools under the Education Bill.

Education minister Baroness Ashton told the committee stage debate on the bill she would consider putting a requirement to consult into the bill instead of leaving it to guidelines.

The bill includes legal powers permitting schools to work in new ways, for example by diverging from the national curriculum.

Concern that councils will be left out if they are not consulted, has been expressed by the Local Government Association.

Controversial measures on intervention in schools will be debated by the House of Lords over the coming weeks.
