Teachers took more than two million sick days at a cost of£430m during 2000, the government has revealed.

Schools standards minister Stephen Timms said full-time teachers in English state schools took 2,392,400 days off sick.

In a House of Commons written reply, Mr Timms said: 'The estimated cost of this lost teacher time is£430m.'
