The Independent writes (p10) that a Cardiff City Council social worker has vowed to defy a 'gagging order' imposed by her employers.

Karen Mackay, who has previously spoken out about alleged abuse in Cardiff children's homes, recently publicly criticised a cut in prison sentence handed out to a former colleague Geoffrey Morris. A judge reduced Mr Morris's sentence for indecently assaulting three boys in care from five years to 40 months.

Ms Mackay, who subsequently received a warning letter from the assistant social services director, said her remarks were aimed at the sentence reduction not the council. 'I expressed my personal thoughts about the sentence on a man I had previously known and trusted being cut. That had nothing to do with the council.'

Cardiff said there was nothing sinister about the letter, The Independent reports. 'No member of staff is allowed to speak to the media about matters relating to work,' a spokesperson said.
