A plan for a tunnel to carry traffic past Stonehenge is being considered by ministers as a way of protecting the environment around the ancient monument, reported The Sunday Telegraph (p13).

Officials at the department of environment, transport and the regions are examining proposals for the A303 which could include charging motorists tolls or using national lottery money to finance a

tunnel.

A proposal by the highways agency to divert the road farther north or south was abandoned after protests. Putting the A303 into a dual-carriageway tunnel has been costed at£200m to£350m.
