Gerald Hirsch, Chief executive, Mid Devon DC

What is your new job?

Chief executive of Mid Devon DC.

Describe your main responsibilities

Trying to make things quicker and simpler, saving money, and improving everything we do.

What attracted you to the role?

Watching other chief executives and thinking “I could do that” and more recently thinking “I could do better than that”.

What is the best piece of career advice you have been given?

Your career is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.

What would your department mascot be?

A happy 100th birthday card. Because very few people die past the age of 100, it would be lucky.

What (or who) keeps you awake at night?

The neighbour’s dog occasionally, but certainly not endlessly turning over things from work I learned long ago that it is better to get a good night’s sleep and deal with issues properly with a fresh mind in the morning.

What maxim do you use to see you through the tough times?

On a good day: wherever you go, go with all your heart.

On a bad day: be free of all prejudice hate everyone equally.
