Employment Minister, Ann Widdecombe has endorsed GNVQs as 'a third route' for young people.

The OFSTED report shows that GNVQs have been welcomed by teachers and students in schools and I am particularly pleased to see that a close working relationship has developed between those schools and employers that have been involved with the new vocational training framework, said Mrs Widdecombe.

'Such a relationship, where schools and colleges are responsive to the needs of industry and commerce is vital if Britain is to have the highly skilled workforce it needs.

'I support the Secretary of State for Education's call for the NCVQ to monitor progress and to take further action if necessary. The report also demonstrates that there is room for improvement in the ways in which levels of competence are assessed in terms of consistency of standards and the need for more user-friendly course material.
