Parliamentary candidates in the North have given their backing to a North of England Assembly of Local Authorities' manifesto which calls for a regional assembly.

The Northern Echo (21 April, p5) reported that a NEA survey to coincide with the launch of the manifesto, gained support from 65 out of 104 general election candidates.

The manifesto advocates a local parliament covering County Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria and the former counties of Tyne and Wear and Cleveland.

The proposed assembly would have powers to set spending priorities and represent the region in Europe.

The NEA manifesto, entitled the The North Says Now is available in full on LGCNet.
