The loss-making direct labour organisation at Wiltshire CC will be axed this year, reported the Salisbury Journal, (December 28, p6).
Its policy and resources committee voted by seven to three to proceed with 'externalisation' with outside firms taking over the job. Council chief executive Dr Keith Robinson said a recovery package for Wiltshire Direct Services had failed.
WDS was hit by the loss of work in Swindon and then the loss of its civil engineering contract. Its turnover has dropped from£30m a year to£9m. More than 1,200 staff must now wait to hear their future.
