The Independent (p4) reports that the world's largest offshore wind farm is to be planted on a sandbank four miles off the Essex coast.

The paper points out that wind turbines at sea d not need planning permission from local councils and Tendring DC knew nothing about the project when contacted by the Independent.

The development manager of the Dutch company which is to construct the windfarm, Christopher Glen, told the paper that the council and local people would be kept fully informed and their views sought.

The project will need other government permissions to avoid threats to fishing or shipping.
