Social services departments will be involved in the spending of£250 million NHS 'winter pressures' money announced by the government last week.

Health secretary Frank Dobson said the money - like a£350m grant last winter - will be used 'to develop new ways of joint working between health and social services'.

At the end of last winter Mr Dobson wrote to health and social services bosses thanking them for their success in avoiding a winter crisis.

The innovations funded by the money are intended to reduce bed-blocking and avoidable hospital admissions of elderly

people.
