Wokingham DC is reviewing its membership of the Local Government Association, following the withdrawal of Bromley LBC from the association last month.

Bromley is the first council to quit the association, describing its £60,000 subscription as 'an expensive luxury' (LGC, 14 March).

Wokingham leader Frank Browne (Con) said the administration was reviewing its membership of all organisations to which it is paying subscription fees.

'We're continuing as a member of the LGA for the time being, but we're reviewing our position,' he said.

'Our subscription is £30,000, which is a lot of money, and we must ensure we are getting value for money.'

There was no particular issue over which Wokingham felt it had been let down by the LGA, said Mr Browne.

Meetings had been held between the council and the LGA to discuss Wokingham's membership, he said, but a final decision whether to give a year's notice to quit would not be made until June.
