The local government ombudsman has ordered Wolverhampton MBC to pay £1,000 costs for wrongly telling a widow she could not give her husband a 'green burial' in her back garden, reported The Daily Telegraph (7 Jan, p7).

The council's refusal of her request on unspecified health grounds was unreasonable and amounted to maladministration, the ombudsman ruled.

The environment department advises there is nothing in law to prevent a burial in ground other than a cemetery unless there is a specific public health risk, the paper reported.
