An official inquiry has been launched after fire fighters failed to turn up at a house fire in which a woman died because they were attending a belated Christmas party.

None of the 12 part-time retained firemen at Shipston on Stour, Warwickshire, were on standby duty when the fire occurred on Saturday night.

The Daily Telegraph (p3) reports that a full-time crew from Stratford-on-Avon, ten miles away, and part-timers from a village seven miles away, turned out to the blaze in which a 48-year-old woman died.

The crews arrived about 15 minutes after the first 999 call but Malcolm Tandy, spokesman for Warwickshire County Fire Service, said: 'The house was quite close to Shipston fire station. Had it been manned it should have taken the local appliance five or six minutes.'

Wallace Redford, the county's chief fire officer, has appointed a senior official to head the investigation into why Shipston's brigade was not operating.
