The mother of a dyslexic 12-year-old will appear before Southampton magistrates today because she has been taking her daughter out of secondary school for two hours tuition a week at a private dyslexia centre for the past three years, The Guardian reports (p9).

Carol Bolton will be charged under the 1993 Education Act with failing to ensure her daughter, Verity Tidmarsh, attends school regularly.

Hampshire CC brought the charges when the headmaster of the girl's school, Keith Rockett, informed Ms Bolton that he could no longer ignore Verity's absences.

Welfare officers then told her that neither the head teacher nor the LEA could allow a child to be absent from school for any reason other than illness.

Ms Bolton, who will be pleading not guilty, said: 'The chairman of the education committee said 'parents do not have rights, they have choices.' I do not have a choice.

'You take the whole package of the LEA, deficient though it is, or you take the child out and educate her yourself or pay for her to be educated privately.'
