The average full-time, male, white-collar local government worker, below principal officer grade, earned £382.50 a week in 1995. For women the average was £278.10 a week.

Statistics published by the Local Government Management Board show the female white-collar wage is not a great deal higher than the £245.80 per week earned by full-time, male, manual council workers. The average female manual worker earned £183.40.

The average wage for all white-collar workers across the whole economy is higher for both men and women than that paid to council staff. Men earned £443.30 a week last year, women £288.10.

Manual staff across the whole economy also earned more - £291.30 for men, £188.10 for women.
