Female participation in full-time and part time education outstrips that of males at the ages of 16 and 17, government figures released today show, the Financial Times reports (p1 and 6).

However, traditional attitudes are still present in the subjects which women study, says the report, with only 1.6% of 18 year-olds taking physics A-level compared with 6% of 18 year-old men.
