Andrew Wood has been appointed as the Audit Commission's lead manager in Wales as part of reorganisation.

Doug Elliott, previously head of the commission, and Stephen Nott, who remains responsible for best value inspection, will both report to Mr Wood.

Mr Wood, who was district audit director, will be in charge of implementing the commission's Welsh strategy in the wake of widespread dissatisfaction with the best value regime.

Mr Wood said: 'Public services in Wales are subject to significant change and increasing scrutiny. Our most recent work indicates best value is helping councils to start improving. Local government in Wales is now beginning to show signs of improvement.'
