Local government and community cohesion minister Phil Woolas has backed the right of Muslim women to wear a veil.

But 'they must realise that other people who don't understand the culture can find it frightening and intimidating', he writes in an opinion piece published in the Sunday Mirror.

Mr Woolas praises Jack Straw for opening the debate, but adds this must be carried out 'in a calm and measured way'.

The Mail on Sunday also reports Mr Woolas' concerns about Britain being seen abroad as Islamophobic.

'People in my constituency [of Oldham] say they have received calls from family members abroad saying, 'Are you still safe in Britain?' They are being told by their news programmes that Muslims are being forced to dress as non-Muslims.'
