Work begins today on a new style secure unit for young offenders from Northamptonshire and Leicestershire, reports BBC Northampton.

It is almost certainly the first to be built since changes in the law dealing with youth crime introduced by the new Criminal Justice Act. It is being built as an addition to facilities at Tiffield, south Northamptonshire, at a cost of £4m.

It is a joint project between Northamptonshire and Leicestershire CCs and will house 16 young men and women. The councils say they chose the design because it combines a high level of security with the atmosphere of a children's home. The unit will include educational facilities as well as administration and residential accommodation.
