Malcolm Sims, head of support and customer service development, East Riding of Yorkshire Council

IF YOU WERE NOT IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

Retired. Living on a yacht in the sun having made my millions in the private sector.

IF THE OFFICE WAS ON FIRE, WHAT THREE THINGS WOULD YOU TAKE WITH YOU?

The incriminating evidence. My family photographs. Laptop. My wife, who also works for the council.

WHAT'S MORE IMPORTANT - JOB SATISFACTION OR MONEY?

Job satisfaction, although the money helps.

WHO OR WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST INSPIRATION?

My father, who advised me to go into local government as opposed to the building trade. He said: 'Laying bricks might be attractive with the sun on your back, but digging footings in the snow isn't'.

WHAT IS THE BEST JOB THAT YOU HAVE EVER HAD?

My current job as I have a wide and varied role, ranging from the registration and celebratory services - births, deaths and marriages - to emergency planning, and I have a great and talented group

of staff.

WHAT WORDS WOULD YOUR COLLEAGUES USE TO DESCRIBE YOU?

Loud, fat, mischievous, grafter, honest, approachable.

WHAT GETS YOU THROUGH THE DAY?

The challenge.
