Who or what has been your greatest inspiration?

Leonard Cheshire, who set up care homes after the Second World War - everything he did made a difference.

What's the best thing about your job?

Being in a position to make a difference.

How would you describe your management style?

Open-door and chameleon-like - changing to suit the needs of individuals.

What's the biggest mistake you have ever made?

Not believing what others thought I could achieve early enough.

If you weren't in local government, what would you be doing?

Roaming the world, talking to people and inviting myself to dinner. Some travel writing to keep me occupied between meals.

What advice would you give to someone starting out?

Don't forget the customer pays your salary.

What gets you through the day?

Two slices of toast and marmite.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I'm still thinking about it.

What's been your best working day ever and why?

The first time I sent a customer away happy and I realised information is power.
