PRINCIPAL PERSONNEL OFFICER, EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE COUNCIL

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR JOB?

I am acting personnel manager for social services, housing, public protection and corporate departments. I'm still principal personnel officer.

IN THAT ROLE?

I have client directorate responsibilities and look after personnel functions for finance and IT. I was managing the directorate's strategic support team. We operate a personnel advisory service on areas such as staff relations.

DAY TO DAY?

There never is a typical day.

I could be doing anything from giving a witness statement to an employment tribunal to representing the council in a dispute. We try to find ways of increasing people's work-life balance while meeting the needs of the council. We've had notable success in addressing sickness and retention issues by various initiatives, such as introducing homeworking .

CAREER?

I have been senior personnel officer for operational services and personnel officer for employee relations here and was personnel officer with Hull College of Further Education.

I have a BA in business studies from Sheffield Hallam University and am a member

of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

PERSONALLY?

I am married and live in a village. I'm not sporting, more of a theatre person.

THE FUTURE?

I love working in local government and enjoy personnel. I'd like to progress to become head of personnel with a council.
