WHAT IS YOUR JOB ABOUT?

I co-ordinate and manage the county's minerals and waste planning service. We deal with mineral extraction sites and planning for waste management facilities.

HOW IS THAT ORGANISED?

We have an adopted minerals and waste local plan, which was the first combined plan in England and Wales in which minerals and waste planning is linked. We needed everybody to be moving in the same direction and spearheaded a partnership to produce a new framework document.

ANY SPECIAL PROBLEMS?

We are involved in a major public inquiry regarding a planning application for potentially the biggest landfill site in the country. Also, old fridges have been classified by a European directive as hazardous waste. We have 19,000 a year to get rid of and no process that can deal with them.

YOUR PAST CAREER?

I started with Avon CC as a minerals officer in 1986 and joined Bedfordshire in 1990 as principal minerals and waste officer. I have been team leader since 1996.

HOW ARE YOU QUALIFIED?

I have degrees in applied science and environmental technology and a diploma in quarrying operations. I am also qualified to drive heavy goods vehicles.

PERSONALLY?

I am married, have a 16 month old son and another on the way. I have been in the Territorial Army for 10 years.

AND THE FUTURE?

I am happy with my work and personal life and do not want to change things, but I think everybody should be aware of opportunities that arise.
