Wrexham CBC has been formally invited to submit its application for city status to the Welsh Office, reported The Daily Post (4 June, p13).

City status can only be granted by the queen under her royal perogative on advice from the home secretary. It will be awarded next year, and in 2002, the 50th anniversary of the queen's accession to the throne.

Derek Griffin, Wrexham's chief executive, said: 'We see the granting of city status as rewarding Wrexham's achievements and reflecting its development as a regional centre.'
