Luton BC has chosen Waste Recycling Group as the preferred bidder for a £40m, 12-year contract to dispose of the town's rubbish.

The Doncaster-based company will process about 100,000 tonnes of rubbish a year under the contract, which is expected to go live in February. It will be responsible for recycling from household 'green bins', composting garden waste, and waste transfer.

It will also redevelop the council's Kingsway depot for recycling and waste transfer, distribute garden waste bins to more homes, and provide and pay for an education officer to help promote understanding of environmentally sound waste disposal.
