Residents of a new private housing estate in Wychavon DC lost their chance to vote at yesterday's general election because they do not officially exist.

As many as 50 homeowners on the Cavendish Place Estate did not receive voting cards due to an error by the council.

Many of the residents were particularly annoyed as they have been paying council tax bills of around£1,000 per property.

A council spokeswoman said: 'I'm afraid we just have to put our hands up on this one and say we don't know what went wrong. Some of the residents didn't move in until after the usual October deadline for sending out voting registration forms but many of them did move in well before that.

'Obviously a valuation officer visited the estate for the purposes of charging residents council tax but for some reason we did not register them for voting purposes.'
