York council is to make a £25,000 a year appointment to monitor the work of quangos, the Yorkshire Post reports (p9).

The Labour-controlled authority says the locals are entitled to know how money is being spent by non-elected bodies such as the health trust which runs York District Hospital.

The appointment will cost £25,201 when administration costs are added, claims the paper. Together with three jobs created in York Council's citizens' unit, the changes will cost more than £70,000.

A register of quangos is to be drawn up with duties responsibilities, salaries and expenses of executive and non-executive staff detailed.
