Institute of Housing president, John Bennett, has warned the government of the 'surprise' and 'concern' caused by the revised timetable for contracting out housing management services.

Housing professionals fear the success of the tendering exercise could be jeopardised by the move, announced by Sir George Young yesterday, said Mr Bennett.

In an open letter, John Bennett said the current timetable was impractical - giving some councils little more than a year: 'It appears to us that a false assessment has been made of the complexity of housing management relative to other services,' he said.

The situation was more serious for those authorities which will be created under the review and who will have only 18 months between reorganisation and the start of contracts, he said.
